Calathea (Prayer Flower)

The prayer flower is a species of the genus Maranta in the family Marantaceae. It is also commonly known as Calathea (Caladia). However, this plant, scientifically referred to as Maranta, is named after the Italian botanist Bartolomeo Maranta. The prayer flower takes its name from the physical change it experiences. With the setting of the sun and the coming of night, the flower takes on an appearance reminiscent of the hands of a praying person.
